5 Players to Watch Against the Dolphins

Posted Aug 27, 2014

Shaun Hill tops Myles Simmons' list of five players to watch against the Dolphins on Thursday.

The fourth preseason game represents one final chance for players on the cusp of making the roster to make an impression. Here’s who you should keep an eye on in Thursday’s game.

1. Shaun Hill

The Rams’ starting quarterback likely will not play much against Miami, but he still tops this list for obvious reasons. For Hill, it’s all about continuing to establish chemistry with the first-team receivers -- a process that should be made easier because Hill has been around the team since the offseason. Head coach Jeff Fisher has expressed full confidence in Hill, and there’s every reason to believe the quarterback will have success leading the offense.

2. Trey Watts

The running back figures to get in good time versus the Dolphins as he vies for a spot on the team. Watts has put himself in good position to make a strong case to be on the 53-man roster, as he’s both rushed and received the ball well. The undrafted rookie out of Tulsa has ran it 12 times for 55 yards and a touchdown, and caught it four times for 39 yards in preseason action. Look for him to once again have an impact on the offense in Miami.

3. E.J. Gaines

The rookie out of Mizzou has put together a nice preseason, and Fisher said the young corner is one candidate to help fill in for Trumaime Johnson. Gaines had gotten a little dinged up and missed a bit of time, but said this week that he’s back at 100 percent. Look for him to make plays both on the outside and at nickel corner, as he’s been working at both positions.

4. Chris Givens

The wide receiver has shown his potential in the past, but the emergence of Kenny Britt and Brian Quick this preseason has overshadowed Givens. But the wideout provided a good reminder of who is is when he caught a short pass from Austin Davis and turned it into a 75-yard  touchdown reception against the Browns. Givens will likely play a bunch on Thursday night, so look for him to connect with Davis and/or Garrett Gilbert.

5. Ethan Westbrooks/Michael Sam

The two rookie defensive linemen have both made plays in their quest for a spot on the 53-man roster. There’s no guarantee Westbrooks and Sam are actually in competition with one another, as the it’s the front office and coaching staff who will decide on how the team will be composed. Either way, Westbrooks and Sam both have been exciting defensive players during the preseason and figure to play significant snaps in Miami.
