The St. Louis Rams Community Player of the Week is defensive tackle Michael Brockers.

Michael Brockers is notable for many things. His size being the most obvious--standing at 6-5 he is one of the tallest members of the Rams defense.  His skills on the field are another well-known trait. During the 2012 season, he led the team’s defensive linemen in tackles with a total of 63 in his rookie year. But a growing amount of fans in the St. Louis area are discovering that Michael’s size and hard work on the field are matched by his dedication to service and giving back in the community.

Particularly, this summer Michael has taken an active interest in making sure that local students in need were prepared for the upcoming school year.

In August, Michael partnered with Little Bit Foundation and hosted a back-to-school event at Patrick Henry Downtown Academy. Kindergartners through sixth graders received school supply packages and a pizza party from Michael and participated in a PLAY 60 event with a giant game board, encouraging them to make healthy life choices. But he didn’t just provide them with tools and the treats necessary to learn, he took time to speak to them on the school’s 2013-2014 theme “Becoming a Champion.” He also met with the sixth graders on their own and talked to them about preparing for middle school. Michael also participated in the first ever D-Line Champion Community Paintball Tournament this summer at Gateway Paintball. Michael and 14 of his teammates played in a round robin tournament, each leading a team. Funds raised provided local families with items needed for a successful school year such as clothes, school supplies and computers. The event was an extension of the defensive linemen’s Sack Homelessness, a program where each defensive lineman, Coach Waufle and Coach McGinnis make a financial contribution to St. Patrick Center for every sack by the Rams.

As part of his dedication to education, Michael and teammate Daryl Richardson also visit Bryan Hill Elementary once a month as a reward for students who meet and achieve their academic goals enjoying fun treats like pizza parties and ice cream floats.

Of course, as a professional athlete, Michael has found ways to incorporate his athletic talents into his service to the community. This summer, he participated in the Jeff Fisher and Friends Celebrity Softball Game with his fellow teammates and coaches to benefit five different charities. He also is a member of the Rams’ All Community Team, a season long initiative where he purchases game tickets and donates them to charitable groups.  Each home game, seats in the ‘Brocker’s Big Timers’ section are filled with members of Boys and Girls clubs and youth in need.

Michael also helped out children in need when he and many of his teammates attended the 2013 Celebrity Night of Wishes benefitting Make-A-Wish Missouri. Michael collected tips from attendants in return for photos and autographs throughout the festive night and helped raise enough money to fund 56 wishes for children in the St. Louis area who are battling terminal illnesses.

“Michael has emerged as a tremendous leader in the community for us,” said Molly Higgins, vice president of corporate communications/civic affairs, St. Louis Rams. “He is making a great impact in St. Louis through his generous financial support of St. Patrick Center and his efforts around underserved youth including his school outreach and his ticket donations to Boys and Girls clubs.  He really appreciates the position that he is in and his ability to make a difference and that certainly was on display when he hosted the back-to-school drive at Patrick Henry. He’s going to be a leader for us for many years to come.”
