Rams Team Up with St. Patrick Center to Host Sports Trivia Championships

Posted Feb 11, 2014

For the 11th consecutive year, St. Patrick Center held their annual ‘World’s Greatest Sports Trivia’ competition, and for the first time, Rams Park in Earth City served as the venue. The event, which drew more than 700 participants and was hosted by Rams general manager Les Snead and his wife, Kara Henderson Snead, featured several current and former St. Louis athletes including Rams linebacker James Laurinaitis and Rams Super Bowl Champion D’Marco Farr throughout the 10-round competition.

The event was just the latest in what has been a significant community partnership between the Rams and St. Patrick Center. As part of the Rams’ Sack Homelessness program, Rams defensive linemen, defensive line coach Mike Waufle and assistant head coach Dave McGinnis contributed $57,900 to St. Patrick Center this season. In two years, the program has generated nearly $110,000. Coach Waufle and Coach McGinnis were honored during the event for the players’ and coaches’ collective contributions.

This year also was the second year the Trivia Championship was hosted by the Sneads, who interacted with fans, athletes and local media personalities throughout the evening. The event questions ranged from the familiar to the obscure, and the winning table took home a grand prize of season tickets to both the Rams and Cardinals for the 2014 seasons. The new venue offered fans an inside look at the Rams’ practice facility and an opportunity to mingle with team representatives prior to and during the event, an added perk for this year’s attendees.

“When you’re an NFL franchise, you’re more than a sports team, you are part of the fabric of the community,” Les Snead said. “The St. Patrick Center is as well, so when you have two pillars of the community working together, it’s going to be better than one. Obviously, trivia is big in St. Louis, but for sports fans to be where players have practiced, who have won Super Bowls, that’s pretty neat. I think for real sports fans to be able to come to this facility, that’s pretty neat for the city.”

St. Patrick Center, which was founded in 1983, serves the St. Louis metropolitan region by offering housing, employment and health services to local homeless and at-risk individuals. The World’s Greatest Sports Trivia Championship has routinely been one of the most beneficial events of the year for the organization.

The event, which has grown steadily while been held at various locations in previous years, drew rave reviews from St. Patrick Center CEO Tom Etling.

“This has been the best sports trivia championship we’ve had in the 11 years we’ve done the event,” Etling said. “It’s really due to the success of the Sack Homelessness program, the support of the St. Louis Rams, the entire organization. It’s been a huge success for our organization. We’ve hosted this event at Scottrade Center, Chaifetz Arena and this is easily the best venue. It’s a little quainter, a little more accommodating, and this is by far the best venue we’ve had in 11 years.”
